Groceries
While on South Padre Island, get you groceries at the Blue Marlin. The prices are a little higher than the Walmart in Port Isabel, but it worth it not to have to cross the bridge back to the mainland.
Hermit Boat
On the southern end of South Padre Island, there’s an old boat anchored in the bay between Pier 19 and the Coast Guard station. A hermit was living on it who would paddle a little raft back and forth to the shore. He’s gone now, but the boat is still there if anyone would like to move in.
Flying Geico Gecko
Every day in March, there’s a small prop plane pulling a Geico billboard back and forth along South Padre Island. Today it was joined by several other planes also dragging ads.
El Cristo de los Pescadores
The “Christ of the Fishermen” memorial is located at the southern tip of South Padre Island in Isla Blanca Park.
The inscription reads: FATHER! RECEIVE THE SOULS OF THE BRAVE FISHERMAN WHO HAVE SAILED THROUGH THIS PASS AND NEVER RETURNED
Danny B
To experience some of South Padre Island’s best bay fishing, take the Danny B out for a 4 hour cruise. The boat leaves from Louie’s Backyard and goes out past the south end of the island to the edge of the bay Gulf of Mexico.
For all of March, they’re running an $18.00 special that includes bait, tackle, and B.Y.O.B. You can find their coupon in the local island newspapers.
Captain Darryl Stiers will get you to the fish. But it’s up to you to catch them. On the Danny B, SPI Computers always takes some fish home for dinner.
After your cruise, fish cleaning for 50 cents each. Don’t forget to tip the deck hand!

Cellular Internet

For all you mobile Internet users, cellular broadband access works on the island. The speed is acceptable, but the latency is high.
Expect lots of browser refresh from dropped packets.
South Padre Island’s Cellular Tower
SPI Failure
Found today at the north end of the island
about ¼ mile from the bay channel.
It looked like someone had been beating
on it with a sledgehammer.
It still has a license plate.
